Meghan R. Callaghan is the Coordinator of Community Engagement and Student Volunteerism at BHCC. In 2006 after graduating from Whitworth University in Spokane, WA with an English degree, Meghan joined Massachusetts Campus Compact as an AmeriCorps *VISTA. She served as a VISTA for two years at BHCC and was then hired full-time as the college’s first Coordinator within the Office of Community Engagement. As a resident of Somerville, Meghan volunteers with Community Cooks and is a Board of Director for the non-profit, People Making a Difference. In 2009, Meghan received a certificate of completion from the National Society for Experiential Education, Experiential Education Academy. In spring 2012, Meghan graduated with a Masters of Arts in Critical and Creative Thinking from University of Massachusetts, Boston and was selected as a 2012-2013 New England Campus Compact Community Service Learning Regional Fellow.
Monica Poole serves as the Faculty Advocate for Community Engagement as part of her role as an Assistant Professor at Bunker Hill Community College. At BHCC, she teaches courses in philosophy, religion, communication, history, and ethical hacking. In 2002, she graduated with an Associate in Arts from Edison Community College. In 2006 she earned her master's degree from Harvard University, and she is currently working on her Ph.D. at the same institution; her dissertation, The Viral Pulpit, tells stories about performance, communication, and crowd dynamics during a period of political and religious reinvention in the early modern English-speaking world. She serves on the board of directors of Elmidoon, an emerging organization aiming to use education to tackle the root causes of poverty, piracy and terrorism in Somalia. She has participated in community work and activism in a variety of contexts, and her most current interests in the theory and praxis of community engagement involve exploring the relationships between social justice, storytelling, aesthetic experience, and spiritual practice.
Catalina Ocampo joined the Office of Community Engagement as the Special Projects Coordinator in 2014. Prior to joining BHCC, Catalina received her B.A. in Social Work at Stockton University in Galloway, NJ. She is currently a candidate for a Masters degree in Clinical Social Work at Simmons College in Boston, MA. In her role as Special Programs Coordinator, Catalina helps to connect student volunteers with community organizations, recruit, supervise and train students to become Service Leaders, expand extra-curricular programming opportunities, and perform student outreach on campus for the Office of Community Engagement.
Kimberly Monaco is the Jumpstart Site Manager at Bunker Hill Community College. Kimberly received a B.A. in Economics and Religious Studies from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. While studying at Holy Cross, Kimberly worked on many service projects, including establishing an after school tutoring program and summer camp at a Worcester elementary school. After graduating from Holy Cross, Kimberly moved to Washington, D.C. to serve as a City Year Corps Member, where she worked as a mentor and tutor in a sixth grade classroom. Once her service with City Year ended, Kimberly completed a Master’s Program at Boston University in Education Policy, Planning, and Administration. This is Kimberly’s first year as a Site Manager with Jumpstart.
Professor Robert “Ted” Carlson is a founding faculty member at Bunker Hill Community College. Ted earned his BA in Mathematics at the then Salem State College and an MA in Mathematics at the University of Michigan. While at the University of Michigan, Ted participated in the first “Teaching in the Community College Fellowship” program. During his tenure at BHCC, Ted has trained tutors to provide on-campus tutoring in math, developed the courses, Practicum in Instruction, which required students to do six hours a week of tutoring mostly off-campus, facilitated a Learn and Serve Grant in 1997, and was one of the six original faculty member to engage students in using service learning. Ted became the part-time Service Learning Coordinator in 2005. Retiring in 2013, Ted continues to work with the Office in a variety of special projects focused on faculty recognition and professional development.
