Programs and Activities
What can you look forward to?
In the Student Activities Office, we strive to create an inclusive environment because we want everyone to feel welcome at Bunker Hill Community College! We understand how important the college experience is, and take great care to engage you from your very first day straight through until Commencement. In this section, you will discover some of the large-scale events we have throughout the year.
From your very first day on campus as a new student, you will be welcomed to the college by New Student Mentors, our team of experienced students who are there to guide you through your first year at BHCC. New Student Orientation at BHCC contains two parts: first, you will go through Advising and Registration, meet with advisors and select your classes for the first semester; second, you will attend New Student Day, where we will provide you with a complete overview of the college and give you all the information you need to have a successful start to your first semester.
The goals of New Student Day are:
- To welcome new students to Bunker Hill Community College and help them feel comfortable and safe in the college environment.
- To familiarize new students with the components that contribute to a student’s success.
- To familiarize new students with the location of key College offices and services provided.
- To help new students understand the importance of asking questions and taking initiative to address their issues.
- To introduce new students to the New Student Mentors, a group of experienced students who can be utilized as resources in their transition to BHCC.
New Student Orientation sessions are planned before and after the start of classes in the fall and spring semesters. Additionally, New Student Orientation Mentors are available in Student Activities on a daily basis, to continue offering support and assistance to all students.
When classes begin each semester, Student Activities presents a series of activities to help welcome you to the college and give you the most up-to-date information about everything going on at BHCC. During the first two weeks, New Student Mentors staff a Welcome and Information table in the Main Lobby to help answer any questions you might have and help you find your way around campus.
You will find information on different College resources, club information, upcoming events, and we always have some giveaways to help make your first days on campus as festive as possible. New Student Mentors will answer any questions you might have, help you find your way around the buildings, and will help make your first days on campus both festive and informative.
There are so many ways to get involved at Bunker Hill Community College! Whether it be through student clubs, mentoring, volunteering or internships, we have many opportunities for you to have more fun, meet new people, and experience new opportunities while you’re a student.
During the 2nd week of classes each semester, the Student Activities Office present Student Involvement Fairs to showcase many of the ways you can get involved on campus and in the community. These fairs are a great way to check out what we offer on campus and meet students with similar interests, so you can begin to build your social and professional network at BHCC. Specific dates and times for each fair will be communicated to you through weekly updates that will be sent to you through BHCC email.
When you come to Bunker Hill Community College, it is not just you who walks through the door; it’s everyone who shares this experience with you. To celebrate completing the first six weeks of the semester, Student Activities presents Family Day. Family Day is a free event, and usually happens on the 3rd Saturday of October. This is open to all BHCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college (anyone you consider to be your family). The BHCC Gymnasium is transformed into a Multicultural Marketplace, highlighting many of the cultures on campus. There is food from around the world, live music, as well as pumpkin painting, mask making and other crafts and games
As the semester comes to an end, Student Activities brings the best of the winter season inside the campus. The Winter Wonderland brings together live music, a health fair, poetry reading, Toys for Tots and other festive celebrations, to celebrate the end of the Fall Semester as one community.
To celebrate the end of the Spring Semester and Academic Year, we present a huge celebration for the entire college community. This is a true community event! The AFSCME Union members as well as faculty and staff volunteers present a barbecue, the Nursing Students present a Health Fair, and Student Activities, Student Government, and Student Clubs present a variety of free activities for everyone to enjoy. You’ll have fun, get free stuff, and hopefully leave with a full stomach!
With over 30 multicultural and multi-interest student clubs and organizations, there is always something going on at BHCC. Every year, you can look forward to events like festivals that celebrate cultures from around the world, workshops on how to develop your skills and network professionally, speakers from local, regional and national levels who share their experiences with students, and fun activities that brighten your day and enrich your life. Always be sure to check out the bulletin boards and TV monitors throughout the campus, as well as your Bunker Hill email account for updates on what is happening each week.
