MassHire CIS

The MassHire Career Information System, or MassHire CIS, is a free online career resource through the State of Massachusetts. Using MassHireCIS, students can take assessments, find employment data, read real world interviews, and watch career videos where you can see real examples of different work environments.

Students can also find information about licensure required for different careers, programs of study related to potential careers, and which Massachusetts colleges and universities offer educational programs related to their careers of interest.

Students should attend Career Exploration 102: Exploration by Pathway after attending Career Exploration 101 and completing the 60 question Career Coach assessment.  The workshop will focus on how to use the results of the Career Coach assessment to explore possible programs of study at BHCC that match student’s career interests. Students will be introduced to MassHire CIS to do detailed research about specific careers.  Students can also use the videos and instructions in the drop down menus below for additional support.

Step 3: Research

Once a student has completed self-assessments and done some exploration to find a few career pathways they are interested in, the next step is in-depth research. This will help students make informed decisions and better prepare themselves for the world of work.  In this step, students should combine what they’ve learned about themselves with the results of their research to be confident in their choice of program and career path. 

At BHCC students can use resources like MassHireCIS to access to informational interviews, occupational videos, and expected job openings in MA as well as other states.  Students should attend Career Advising 102- Career Planning by Pathway so they can learn how to use MassHireCIS find answers to the questions below.

  • Who can I talk to in order to learn more about this career?
  • How can I gain experience relevant to my future career?
  • What is the career outlook for this major/career?

Step 4: Planning

Students should now use the information they gathered and work with advisors to create a short and long-term plan for next steps.  They can work with their assigned advisor to review their degree and get support planning out their classes for graduation.  If a bachelor’s degree is required for students to achieve their career goals students should attend a Transfer 101 Workshop before meeting with their advisor.  Students will work with Internships & Career Development to create a resume and sign up for Handshake where they can find internship and job opportunities.

  1. Career Cluster Inventory: Answer questions about tasks/activities you would like/dislike doing to match your interests with the 16 Career Clusters.
    1. Students use Career Clusters to identify career fields and possible occupations within that field.
    2. A Career Cluster is another name for a grouping of similar occupations.  For example the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster includes occupations such as: firefighters, corrections officers, and paralegal.

  2. Interest Profiler/ Interest Profiler Short Form: You can choose to complete the long or short version of this assessment,   Rate activities you like or dislike in order to learn about how your interests relate to different career fields.
    1. Students use the results of the Interest Profiler to learn about how their interests align with possible occupations and careers.
    2. Occupational interests are related to specific work tasks that you may prefer. For example, students with Artistic results may see jobs related to architecture, video game design, and theatre or fine arts.

  1. Career Clusters: A Career Cluster is another name for a grouping of similar occupations.  Students can use their results from the Career Cluster Inventory to search specific groups or choose clusters from the list to learn more.

  3. Occupations Filter:  Students can discover occupations based on their selection of personal values and interests, salary, level of educational training, and more.
    • These exploratory tools help students find careers that may be a good fit by creating career lists based on student selected criteria. These tools do not create lists of careers that a student should do but lists careers that match factors students self-selected as important to them.
