Students Place 2nd at Annual Mass Society of Radiologic Technologists Buzz Bowl

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (April 24, 2019) – Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), MassBay Community College, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS), and Regis College are pleased to announce a student radiology team has placed second at this year’s Massachusetts Society of Radiologic Technologists (MSRT) Buzz Bowl competition. The Buzz Bowl was part of the MSRT 88th Annual Conference held April 10-12 in Leominster, Mass. and this year’s theme was “A Winning Combination”.
The Massachusetts Society of Radiologic Technologist hosted the Buzz Bowl competition to challenge students’ knowledge in the field of Radiologic Technology. The eight-member student team from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, which included one student from MCPHS, one student from Regis College, two MassBay students, and four BHCC students, competed against six other teams from across the state.
The student team participants included; Team Captain Theresa Brogan of Holliston (MassBay), KaraRose Gotta of Norwell (BHCC), Emily Heno of Franklin (MassBay), Victor Hernandez of Roxbury (BHCC), Jonah Jeanty of Boston (BHCC), Brian Mureithi of Salem (BHCC), Nayane Dias Mota of Peabody (Lawrence Memorial/Regis College), and Rebecca Sauter of Chelmsford (MCPHS). Students were coached by Victoria Glassman, senior Program Manager for Radiology Education at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Kevin Tavares, a MassBay Alum and Computed Tomography (CT) Technologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital offers the opportunity for all clinical students to participate for the Buzz Bowl team pending the permission of their college programs. The students have been working since Fall 2018 in preparation for the Buzz Bowl competition. The Buzz Bowl tests student knowledge on Radiation Protection, Radiation Physics, Radiographic Technique, Patient Care, and Radiographic Procedures. The four Colleges and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have maintained a clinical affiliation for the benefit of providing practical application of Radiologic concepts in the hospital setting. Brigham and Women’s Hospital Radiology Education Director Victoria Glassman and CT Technologist Kevin Tavares provide a valuable service to all the Clinical students, and are greatly appreciated by the Radiography Programs at these Colleges.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of their Buzz Bowl experience!”
“This group of students was very special to me,” said Kevin Tavares. “This was my first time coaching a Buzz Bowl team and I could not have asked for a more hardworking, dedicated, and intelligent group of students. They will surely make phenomenal technologists and I look forward to watching them grow and blossom in the Radiology field.”

Our affiliation with Brigham and Women’s Hospital Radiography Program has provided MassBay students with an excellent hands-on experience. We are grateful for the commitment Brigham Clinical Instructor, Victoria Glassman has shown towards the education of Radiography students. Through her role she introduces the clinical students to all aspects of the profession and supports their efforts in developing into a confident Radiographer. Through the combined efforts of Victoria Glassman and MassBay Faculty, Theresa and Emily were able maximize their clinical experiences and proudly represent our affiliation. MassBay looks forward to continued affiliation with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and being able to provide future opportunities to our next generation of students.”
In addition, two MassBay Radiology students were recognized at the conference with a scholarship and a student leadership development program. Theresa Brogan of Holliston was presented with the Quarter Century Club Student Scholarship, given annual to entry-level students in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, and Radiation Therapy. Emily Heno of Franklin was selected as a 2019 Student Leadership Development Program recipient, giving her the opportunity to attend the 2019 ASRT Educational Symposium and Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida this June.
