English Study for Au Pairs

Are you an Au Pair who wants to improve your English skills? Then this course is for you!

In the English Study for Au Pairs courses, classes run two days per week (Saturday and Sunday) for seven weeks. Class each day runs for six hours, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You will receive 12 hours of classroom instruction per week. By the end of seven weeks, you will receive 84 hours of classroom instruction.

As an Au Pair, you are required to complete six credits, or 72 hours of instruction. Because the spring classes are 84 hours, there are two extra days, or 12 hours, built-in so that you can still complete the course if you need to miss two days.

Class Structure and Materials

Class time is spent learning and practicing English skills from listening and speaking to reading, writing and grammar. You will study English with others who have similar English abilities. The texts you will be using during the course of study are from the Cambridge University Press Touchstone/Viewpoint series. The textbooks can be purchased prior to the beginning of class from the BHCC Campus Store (located on the 4th floor of the E-building).

Credit Hours and Course Completion

While there are no credits attached to the English classes, the 84 hours for the seven-weekend course meet the language instruction requirements for Au Pairs. The program will give you a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the course, which you can then present to your Au Pair agency as proof of having met the English language requirement.

Advancement Policy

Please be aware that you will not be able to advance to the next level of coursework after taking the weekend class. This is because you are receiving fewer instructional hours than students taking the weekday class. If you know you want to move on to the next level after taking a weekend Au Pair class, please speak with Abby Massaro before registering.

Getting Started: Take the Online Placement Test

The first step is to take a placement test to determine your level. The test consists of three sections: Listening (20 items), Reading (20 items), and Language Use (30 items). It takes about one hour to complete. There is also a placement essay, which takes 15 minutes. Testing takes place in the H-Building in the Hood Office Park (570 Rutherford Avenue)

Please make an appointment to take your placement test. To schedule an appointment, contact Abby Massaro at 617-228-2009 or by email at abigail.massaro@bhcc.edu.

Testing hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., but the last test is given at 3:30 p.m.

Coming to the H Building (570 Rutherford Avenue in Charlestown, MA)

We strongly recommend taking public transportation to get here. Take the Orange Line MBTA train to Sullivan Station. When you exit the station, turn right and walk to Cambridge Street. At Cambridge Street, turn left, then cross the busy intersection and walk down Spice Street. Once on Spice Street, walk down to the Hood Office Park parking lot. Walk to building 570 (Bunker Hill Community College). Once in the building, ask the security person sitting in the lobby to bring you to see Abby Massaro (office H-116).

The BHCC Shuttle bus leaves from the G-Building located at the main campus (250 New Rutherford Avenue). For more details, visit Shuttle ScheduleYou can track the BHCC Shuttle buses with the Live Shuttle Tracker.

If you are driving to the H-Building, plug in Bunker Hill Community College H-Building, 570 Rutherford Avenue into your GPS. Once you arrive, drive to the back of the parking lot until you reach building 570. Short term visitor parking is located on the side of the building.

Book Purchase

There are two books to purchase for your course. You must purchase them at the college bookstore located on the 4th floor at the main campus at 250 New Rutherford Avenue. We do not recommend that you buy the books from another bookseller as you may be buying the wrong book. To ensure that you and your classmates have the right textbooks, you must purchase your books at the college bookstore.

The main campus is conveniently located by the Community College Orange Line T station. Once you exit the station, the college is in front of you. When you enter the second floor lobby, walk to the E-Building and take the elevator or stairs to the 4th floor.

For hours of operation, visit https://www.bhcc.edu/bookstore/

Campus Parking

If you plan on driving to campus, you are required to purchase a $55.49 parking permit for the semester. Before you purchase your parking permit, you need to have your BHCC email address. You may request your BHCC email by contacting Student Support at 617-228-3441. Please have your BHCC ID# ready to give to student support and the person will look up your BHCC email address.

Parking rules and regulations can be found at https://www.bhcc.edu/parking/. Click the Charlestown Campus to access details about parking on campus. There is a ParkWhiz Purchasing Page link that takes you directly to the application form (see link below).
