Course-by-Course Evaluation
If you earned credits at a university located outside of the United States or Canada* and are seeking transfer credit at BHCC, you must obtain a detailed course-by-course evaluation of your international transcripts utilizing a credential evaluation service. Organizations our students frequently use are:
- The Center for Educational Documentation (CED)
- Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
- The Evaluation Company (TEC)
- World Education Services (WES)
We also accept credential evaluations from organizations with AACRAO membership and organizations endorsed by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) and the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). Visit their websites for a full list of members:
NACES: www.naces.org
AICE: www.aice-eval.org
Students who plan to transfer to a 4-year university may be required to use a specific credential evaluation service. If you know where you plan to transfer after studying at BHCC, contact the school’s admissions department and ask which credential evaluations they accept. Please note that an official translation of transcripts is not sufficient for receiving transfer credits at BHCC – a course-by-course evaluation is required.
International Evaluations for Transfer Credit
New students accepted into degree or certificate programs who previously studied at a university outside of the United States, must submit an official course-by-course evaluation to the Academic Records office and register to attend Start Now. Your courseby-course evaluation will be evaluated for transfer credit when you attend Start Now. If you submit your official course-by-course evaluation after attending Start Now, please email us at transferservices@bhcc.edu so we can prioritize your evaluation. Please remember to include your BHCC student ID number in your email. Remember that you should attend Start Now even if you have not yet received transfer credit.
How do I submit my official evaluation?
Electronically: AcademicServices@bhcc.edu
By mail:
Academic Records Office
Bunker Hill Community College
250 New Rutherford Avenue, Boston, MA 02129
In-Person: Student Central, room B202, Charlestown campus. All official transcripts must be received by BHCC staff members in their original, sealed envelope.
How does BHCC determine which international courses can transfer?
- International transcripts require course-by-course evaluation by a recognized international education evaluation company. The sending institution must be authorized to grant the international equivalent of an associate or baccalaureate degree.
- Courses have a final grade of C- or higher.
- Courses are consistent in scope with coursework offered at BHCC.
- Students must demonstrate completion of a prerequisite course with a final grade of C- (70) or higher, although some courses may have higher prerequisite requirements.
- Transferred courses will appear on the BHCC transcript with a letter grade of TR. TR grades are not counted in your BHCC GPA (Grade Point Average) and are not used to calculate your completion rate. BHCC uses both completion rates and GPA to calculate your academic standing at the College.
- Students must meet the residency requirement to earn a BHCC associate degree or certificate. For more information on residency requirements, please visit the College Catalog.
Additional Notes
- While a syllabus is not required for courses to transfer, a syllabus may be requested to facilitate the transfer process. If a syllabus is not received, the student will receive elective credit as long as the guidelines outlined above have been met. Once a syllabus is submitted, the course will be re-reviewed by the Dean, Department Chair or designee in the appropriate academic department, to determine if a more appropriate transfer equivalent exists.
- In the instance that a transfer course has a greater number of credits than the BHCC equivalent, additional credits may be granted as general electives, assuming contact hours are aligned.
- Note that students applying to selective health programs should review application requirements as some programs have specific time limits. If you have questions about your transcript evaluation, email transferservices@bhcc.edu.
If you have questions about your transcript evaluation, email transferservices@bhcc.edu.
*Most Canadian transcripts do not require an evaluation by a third-party service. To confirm that an evaluation is not required, please email an unofficial copy of your Canadian transcript to transferservices@bhcc.edu.
