Transfer Credit Evaluations

New students accepted into degree or certificate programs must submit official college transcripts from all colleges previously attended and register to attend Start Now. Students who register for Start Now and submitted official transcripts will have their transcripts evaluated when they attend the session. If you submit your official transcripts after attending Start Now, please email us at transferservices@bhcc.edu so we can prioritize your evaluation. Please remember to include your BHCC student ID number in your email. Remember that you should attend Start Now even if you have not yet received transfer credit.

How do I submit my official transcript(s)?

Electronically: AcademicServices@bhcc.edu

By mail:

Academic Records Office
Bunker Hill Community College
250 New Rutherford Avenue
Boston, MA 02129

In-Person: Student Central, room B202, Charlestown campus. All official transcripts must be received by BHCC staff members in their original, sealed envelope.

How does BHCC determine which courses can transfer?

  • The domestic sending institution holds regional accreditation.
  • International transcripts require course-by-course evaluation by a recognized international education evaluation company. The sending institution must be authorized to grant the international equivalent of an associate or baccalaureate degree. Visit International Transfer Credit for more details.
  • Courses have a final grade of C- or higher.
  • In accordance with MassTransfer guidelines, grades of D, D+, C- and CD (1.00 to 1.99 on a 4.00 scale) may transfer when completed as part of the 34-credit MassTransfer General Education Foundation (formerly known as the MassTransfer Block) and the General Education Foundation was completed with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher. MassTransfer General Education Foundation/Block completion must be indicated on the official transcript from the sending institution.
  • Courses are consistent in scope with coursework offered at BHCC.
  • Courses completed on a quarter-credit system are converted to the semester-credit system, resulting in an adjustment of credits.
  • Students with a baccalaureate degree from domestic, regionally accredited institutions will receive transfer credit for ENG 111 College Writing I and ENG 112 College Writing II.
  • Students must demonstrate completion of a prerequisite course with a final grade of C- (70) or higher, although some courses may have higher prerequisite requirements.
  • Transferred courses will appear on the BHCC transcript with a letter grade of TR. TR grades are not counted in your BHCC GPA (Grade Point Average) and are not used to calculate your completion rate. BHCC uses both completion rates and GPA to calculate your academic standing at the College.
  • Students must meet the residency requirement to earn a BHCC associate degree or certificate. For more information on residency requirements, please visit the College Catalog.

Additional Notes

  • While a syllabus is not required for courses to transfer, a syllabus may be requested to facilitate the transfer process. If a syllabus is not received, the student will receive elective credit as long as the guidelines outlined above have been met. Once a syllabus is submitted, the course will be re-reviewed by the Dean, Department Chair or designee in the appropriate academic department, to determine if a more appropriate transfer equivalent exists.
  • In the instance that a transfer course has a greater number of credits than the BHCC equivalent, additional credits may be granted as general electives, assuming contact hours are aligned.
  • Note that students applying to selective health programs should review application requirements as some programs have specific time limits. If you have questions about your transcript evaluation, email transferservices@bhcc.edu

Regional Accreditation

BHCC accepts transfer credit from domestic institutions holding regional accreditation. Regional accrediting organizations throughout the United States are listed below:

  • Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) Western Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)

BHCC does not accept transfer credits from domestic institutions holding national accreditation, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, or technical/vocational accreditation. Students who previously studied at an institution that did not hold regional accreditation are encouraged to connect with our Credit for Prior Learning office. Transcripts

Official vs Unofficial Transcripts

Official College Transcripts: Official college transcripts must be sent directly to BHCC from a Registrar’s office, Electronic Exchange, or third-party transcript service company such as Parchment or Credly. Paper official transcripts must be submitted in their original, unopened envelope. Official transcripts are required for receiving transfer credit.

Unofficial College Transcripts: Unofficial electronic and paper transcript are provided to BHCC by students and have not been delivered in their original, unopened envelope. Transcripts that students upload or email to BHCC are not considered official. Unofficial transcripts can be used for advising and pre-requisite purposes and exemption from placement testing.
