BHCC Showcases Expanding STEM Pathways at Annual Community Breakfast

Wednesday, October 22, 2025

Bunker Hill Community College’s 2025 Fall Community Breakfast on October 22 emphasized the increasing importance of STEM education and BHCC’s vital role in developing a diverse pipeline of future scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians.

Associate Director of Admissions Kandley Val welcomed guests and introduced Dr. Laura Rubin, Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, who highlighted that STEM careers continue to drive economic growth, offering high demand, competitive wages, and endless opportunities for innovation.

BHCC’s STEM Division highlighted its role as an accessible and affordable starting point for students entering STEM fields. With low student-to-faculty ratios, highly experienced instructors, and hands-on learning at the heart of its programs, the college offers a supportive environment that helps each learner succeed. Students can choose from a wide range of degrees and certificates across science, health, technology, mathematics, and engineering—many with clear transfer pathways to top universities.

The student panel, facilitated by Dr. Tiffanie Pierce, Assistant Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, highlighted BHCC’s extensive network of experiential learning opportunities. From internships and job shadowing to undergraduate research, mentoring, workplace visits, and Learn & Earn experiences, the College ensures students are prepared for careers. Notable achievements—including a NASA Minds Grand Championship—demonstrate students' talent and faculty's dedication.

Financial access remains a key part of BHCC’s mission. Melissa Holster, the Executive Director of Student Financial Services and Student Central, explained how the MassReconnect and MassEducate programs enable eligible residents to attend community college tuition-free, broadening opportunities for adults and high school graduates alike. Student Central acts as a comprehensive hub for financial aid, registration, payments, and student services.

Director of Community Integrated Services Renata Mauriz reaffirmed BHCC’s commitment to immigrant and undocumented students through dedicated support services, financial pathways, and entrepreneurial career options.

The event concluded with a message of partnership and collaboration, inviting community members to connect, engage, and help guide the next generation of STEM leaders.
