They are among 29 adult learners statewide who received scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year based on their educational achievements, community service, and perseverance. Since 1990, First Literacy has awarded more than 600 scholarships to adult learners pursuing higher education or vocational training.

One of this year’s honorees, BHCC student Ana Maria Garcia of East Boston, is a second-year scholar continuing her studies in Business. “At Bunker Hill Community College, we witness the transformative power of education every day, especially through students like Ana Maria Garcia,” said Dr. Pam Eddinger, President of BHCC. “Her determination, resilience, and commitment to her goals embody the spirit of First Literacy. We are honored to support her journey and celebrate all the scholars who are turning adversity into opportunity.”

The event will feature keynote speaker Trinh Nguyen, Boston’s Chief of Worker Empowerment and Director of the Office of Workforce Development, who also serves as BHCC’s Board of Trustees Secretary. First Literacy has awarded more than half a million dollars in scholarships since its founding, supporting adult learners in fields such as business, healthcare, education, and technology.
