Pathways To Success Hosts Fiesta at Charlestown Campus; Lunch and Learn at Chelsea

Tuesday, April 11, 2023

Pathways to Success, the BHCC office that administers the College’s Title V grant and a critical piece of the College’s Federal designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution, held a Fiesta on the Charlestown campus and a Lunch and Learn on the Chelsea campus in recent weeks—both events filling an important need in building community and sharing information with BHCC students.

The Fiesta at Charlestown was held on March 20 in the gym, and included 14 departments and teams from across the college sharing resources, as well as representatives of each of the six pathways as well as TELL Magazine and STEM Starter. The event also distributed more than $1,500 in student incentives that could be used for instructional materials by students enrolled in the current semester. The event also included music from DJ Triana and food from Pan y Café.

“Fiesta is a celebration of the Pathways to Success program,” said Maritza Gaviria Onodje, Director of the Student Success Initiative. “Like our Pathways, this event is a product of the work of the entire College community. It is a critical part of ensuring that students have the resources and information they need to be successful in whatever Pathway they choose. It’s all about building a BHCC support system.”

Pathways represent broad areas or fields of interest in which similar programs of study are grouped. Each student is encouraged to select a pathway over the course of their academic journey, which helps them get connected to relevant resources and support. Pathways at BHCC are: Arts, Humanities, Communication and Design (AHCD); Behavioral, Social Sciences and Education; Business and Hospitality; Health; Law and Public Service and Safety; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The latest installment of the Pathways to Success Lunch and Learn series was held on the Chelsea Campus on March 23, and featured noted student success leader La’Tonya (LT) Rease Miles, and fantastic catering from Pan y Café. Dr. Rease Miles talked about building and sustaining a community as a first-generation student and professional.

A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Rease Miles has established two successful programs for first-generation college students—one at UCLA and the other at Loyola Marymount University—both recognized as First-gen Forward institutions. She regularly consults with institutions nationally concerning first-gen students and also has advised local high schools about developing programs on their campus. Finally, she established and manages a national Facebook group, "Empowering First Generation Students" and is the Chief Strategist for the "First Gen & Juice" brand.

Lunch and Learn sessions are free and open to all. To be alerted to the next Pathways Lunch and Learn, subscribe to their newsletter.
