Friday, February 8, 2019

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) President Pam Eddinger joined Catherine D’Amato, President and CEO of the Greater Boston Food Bank, on NECN-TV’s “The Take with Sue O’Connell” to discuss the findings of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) Report “Food Insecurity: Better Information Could Help Eligible College Students Access Federal Food Assistance Benefits.”

“One of the reasons that BHCC began looking at food insecurity is because of retention and completion,” said President Eddinger. “Approximately 1,000 BHCC students are enrolled in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). We have a monthly mobile market that brings 8,000 pounds of food to our campus. It is gone within two hours. We need to look at how hunger and food insecurity are affecting our students’ abilities to complete and sustain their academic progress. Unless we solve this problem, we are not going to get any better.”

Aired daily on NECN-TV, “The Take with Sue O’Connell” is a nightly forum for analysis and commentary on the top stories of the day.
