Adult Education and Transitions to College Program

Bunker Hill Community College offers two Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) grant funded programs to assist adults in developing the necessary skills in English language proficiency, acquire a High School Credential (HiSET), and the skills to successfully complete college courses and receive up to 15 college program credits.

The Adult Education Program

The Adult Education program provides educational and support services for adults who lack English language and literacy skills and/or do not have a high school diploma. This comprehensive program provides free educational services that include courses in English Language Literacy (ELL), AE literacy, and High School Equivalency Assessment (HiSET) preparation in Spanish and in English.

Application process

Application Process – Adult Education at BHCC

To join our program, please follow these steps:
    • 👉 Step 1: Inquiry Form

    • 👉 Step 2: Application Form
      You will get a text with the application form. Fill it out and send it back.
    • 👉 Step 3: Placement Test
      Take an online assessment so we know the best class level for you. 
    • 👉 Step 4: Waitlist & Information
      After finishing the steps, you will be on our waitlist. We’ll contact you when a space is available.

Waitlist Information

Our Adult English program currently has a waitlist, but we encourage you to stay connected with us throughout the school year, especially if your circumstances change. While you wait, you can continue practicing your English by reading books, visiting the library, listening to English music or podcasts, and using free online resources such as YouTube.

We also invite you to join our Let’s Talk group every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom to practice your speaking skills in a supportive environment.

Class length and schedule

Classes are available mornings, evenings, and Saturdays starting in September through June 19th. Weekday class times are 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., with Saturday sessions running from 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Classes are 6 hours each week, from September to June.
You can choose one of the following schedule options:
  • Mon & Wed: Morning (9 AM–12 PM) OR Evening (6 PM–9 PM)

  • Tue & Thu: Morning (9 AM–12 PM) OR Evening (6 PM–9 PM)

  • Saturday: 9 AM–3 PM (in person, Chelsea Campus)
  1. After you send the Inquiry Form, you will get a call from our Enrollment Coordinator.

  2. You will take a placement test online, at home.

  3. Then, your name will go on a waitlist for when a seat is available.

You can practice English while waiting. Here are some ideas:
  • Join our LET’S TALK Conversation Class (free, Wednesdays, 12:30–1:30 PM)

  • Visit your local library for free English programs

  • Watch YouTube English learning channels

The program offers English levels for beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners.

The Adult Education program offers English for Speakers of other Language (ESOL); High School Equivalency (HiSet/GED) and Transitions to College Program. However, The Division of Workforce and Economic Development offers several other workforce training programs.
