Dear BHCC Community,

As we study the inspirational achievements and ongoing struggles in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 17, 2022, I hope we take his teachings to heart and reflect on our own work, and that of our community, our nation, and our world.  

On Thursday, January 13, Dr. Pam Eddinger, President of Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), and BHCC psychology student Julia Vogel participated in an event titled: Call to Mind Live: Pass or fail - mental health in community colleges. The discussion focused on understanding and navigating the mental health gaps in community colleges.

Dear BHCC Community,

Since last week’s Russian invasion of Ukraine, I have watched the events unfolding in Europe with concern and sorrow. Violence and war are the enemies of the values that this College and virtually every educational institution hold dear. Where education broadens our understanding of ourselves and the world, war narrows it; where education lifts a light by which we might see, violence casts only shadow. As a College, we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and with victims of war and violence everywhere. 

First college food pantry in the country to use automated refrigerated lockers to help the community access needed food and supplies

Earlier this month, Bunker Hill Community College’s DISH Food Pantry took a major step towards improving access to food and other daily necessities to the college community. In an otherwise nondescript hallway in B-Building, outside the DISH’s main food pantry, a bank of lockers, brightly colored in red and gray and adorned with the stolid visage of Charlie the Bulldog, stand ready to serve meals and much more—the first such lockers to be used by a college food pantry in the country.

College’s first new building in a decade expands student services and learning commons with a climate-responsive design 

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) broke ground on a new Student Success Center building on Tuesday, April 26, the first new building in more than a decade for the state’s largest community college and the first of several planned upgrades for the almost 50-year-old campus. 

On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) visited Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) to celebrate the $1,000,000 in federal community project funding she secured to expand the City of Boston’s Tuition-Free Community College program. Rep. Pressley was joined by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, BHCC President Pam Eddinger, and BHCC students for a campus tour and a press conference to highlight how the funding will help address the college affordability crisis locally as she continues her calls for President Biden to cancel student debt.

Pressley secured this federal funding for Boston in the government spending package that passed Congress and was signed into law by President Biden in March. In total, Rep. Pressley secured over $8 million for 10 community projects across the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District, capping off nearly a year of advocacy by Rep. Pressley and local leaders.

Yesterday, the scope of national tragedy grew larger: the senseless murder of 19 people, all but one of them school children, in Uvalde, Texas. The more frequently these tragedies occur, the harder they are to comprehend. A supermarket in Buffalo, a church in Laguna Woods, a school in Parkland, a school in Sandy Hook, and so many more murders driven by racism, misogyny, homophobia, and other forms of hate, made possible by the easy reach of a gun. How do we end this senseless cycle of violence? Why are the broadly popular policies for gun safety left to languish in the halls of power? Why is the most common reaction to these mass shootings to simply wait for the next one?

The Division of Workforce and Economic Development at Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has partnered with Triumvirate Environmental, Inc., one of the largest environmental services firms in North America, to launch a new program offering employment and full tuition to selected new and continuing BHCC students starting in September 2022.

On Sunday, we observe the 21st anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. In acts of unspeakable violence, 2,977 people from across the country and the world lost their lives in the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. The attacks and their aftermath were felt by people not only in the United States but around the globe. For those who lost loved ones and friends, the tragedy of that day rings undiminished through the decades—they can never be forgotten.

This weekend, Hurricane Fiona made landfall in the Caribbean, knocking out power and threatening over two million residents with severe flooding and wind damage in its path. In particular, Fiona devastates Puerto Rico on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria, even as the island struggles valiantly to recover from the last tragedy.  We understand that it will take a number of days to restore power. Water, medicine and basic needs remain critical. Those of you with friends and family in Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, The British and the U.S Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, and all other impacted communities in the Caribbean and the Diaspora, we share your worries about the health and safety of your loved ones and hold them in our thoughts.

On Monday, October 10, we observe Indigenous Peoples Day—a day to commemorate the proud histories of the people of the First Nations.  We offer gratitude to them for their role as stewards of the land on which we now live and solidarity in the work of preserving and extending the cultural wealth and richness of the Nations’ cultures.  

PATH Scholarship program directly supports financially-challenged students at U.S. Minority Serving Institutions

October 31, 2022—Boston, MA — Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) was selected as a 2022 Progress, Accomplishment, Thriving, Hope (PATH) Scholarship recipient through the Ellucian Foundation. The PATH Scholarship program provides grants to higher education institutions to support students facing economic hardship.  BHCC received $25,000, which will be distributed to up to 50 students to help cover items such as housing costs, tuition expenses, and food. 

College’s first new building in a decade reaches construction milestone

Construction of the new Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) Academic Student Success Center is well underway, with the final beam put in place during last week’s topping off ceremony. The center is BHCC’s first new building in more than a decade and represents the latest of several campus renovation and rejuvenation projects. Once complete, the 53,500 square foot space will house a variety of services including academic advising, counseling, and student affairs.  

Joins US Rep. Ayanna Pressley in welcoming neighborhood to annual tradition 

Bunker Hill Community College Pam Eddinger welcomed the college’s Charlestown neighbors to the 37th Annual Monument Square Halloween festivities on Monday evening. From the stairs leading to the base of the Bunker Hill Monument, Eddinger kicked off Halloween celebrations with a crowd of hundreds of Charlestown residents—many of them brilliantly costumed.  

BHCC President Pam Eddinger joins colleges, unions, and businesses at the White House to highlight equitable workforce development 

President Joe Biden praised Bunker Hill Community College in his White House remarks on Wednesday, highlighting the College’s workforce development programs as part of the administration’s Infrastructure Talent Pipeline Challenge.

College’s Chinatown Partnership Hosts BHCC Classes and Serves as Community Arts and Performance Hub 

Congratulations to the Pao Arts Center on celebrating their 5th anniversary on October 19! Braving thunderstorms and traffic, guests gathered at Pao Arts Center for an evening of connection and celebration of the center’s accomplishments in its first five years of operation.

Dear BHCC Community:

In the midst of the holiday season, we are grieving. Our peace this past week was shattered by the deadly shooting at Club Q, a gathering place for the LGBTQIA+ community in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The violence claimed the lives of five people and injured 17 others, and to add to the devastation, this happened on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day named to honor those lost to anti-transgender violence. This latest incident echoes the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse, the gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where 49 were killed and as many wounded. The trend of violence against the LGBTQIA+ community has not abated, and the acrimonious divisions in our society have only added fuel to these senseless acts.

Bunker Hill Community College unequivocally condemns the murder of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd woman who died in police custody this past September. Known to her friends and family as Zhina, she had been held for three days for her refusal to wear the Hijab, a violation of the Islamic Republic’s dress code laws.
