Bunker Hill Community College Student Wins Two National Scholarships

Today, Quan Nguyen, a recent graduate of Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), has been named to the 2015 All-USA Community College Academic Team at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) convention in San Antonio, Texas. This comes with a $2,500 scholarship and special medallion. Nguyen was among the 20 highest-scoring students nationwide recognizing two-year college students for their combination of academic excellence, service and leadership.

Quan NguyenNguyen was also one of only 50 students nationwide to be named at the AACC convention, a 2015 Coca-Cola New Century Scholar, receiving a $2,000 scholarship and certificate. He was chosen for the honor based on his top score among Massachusetts nominees in the 2015 All-USA Community College Academic Team competition. Nguyen is the sixth BHCC student to have earned the title of New Century Scholar. Its past recipients include: Ratna Lusiaga (2013); Elsa John (2011); Keisha Mayers (2010); Kevin Sheehan (2006); and Alessandra Cepeda (2005).

The first in his family to attend college, Nguyen is majoring in chemical-biological engineering and pursuing a minor in biomedical and materials science at MIT on a full scholarship. Prior to his admission to MIT, BHCC Foundation named Nguyen a 2014 Ruby Scholar. Nguyen also won an Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship being one of only 20 students in the nation to receive the award. He was honored at the State House as one of the “29 Who Shine,” a group of 29 extraordinary graduates of Massachusetts public colleges and universities; Nguyen was lauded for his academic performance, leadership and service to the field of health and medicine.

“It is so rewarding to experience the joy and recognition of Quan’s accomplishments today,” said BHCC President Pam Eddinger. “I look forward to seeing him continue his journey including his studies at MIT.”

The All-USA Community College Academic Team is sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group and presented by USA Today with support from AACC, the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges and Phi Theta Kappa, the largest honor society in American higher education.

The New Century Scholars Program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, AACC and Phi Theta Kappa.
