Biology and Chemistry

Welcome to the Biology and Chemistry Department

Whether you are looking to start your career in the lab sciences, get started on your health science programs requirements or transfer to a four-year institution, the Biology and Chemistry department has the right program to help you achieve your goals.

Our Programs

Medical Professions Option - The Medical Professions Option at BHCC provides students with the technical coursework and laboratory experiences that enable them to successfully transfer and pursue a career in the medical and health professions including medical, veterinary, pharmacy, physical therapy and physician’s assistant programs. Students should tailor this option by choosing electives based on the requirements of the programs to which they plan to apply. BHCC has transfer agreements with the UMass system, enabling graduates to enroll in any one of these universities as juniors, without losing credits

Biology Transfer Option - The Biology Transfer Option at BHCC provides students with the technical coursework and laboratory experience that enables them to successfully transfer to undergraduate biology programs. Graduates of this program pursue further study at four-year colleges and universities in college-level biology programs including health sciences, biochemistry, biotechnology or ecology. BHCC has transfer agreements with the UMass system enabling Biology Transfer graduates to enroll in any one of these universities at the junior level without losing credits.

Biotechnology Option - An explosion of knowledge in molecular biology in the past decade has created an increased demand for skilled workers in the biotechnology industry. The Biotechnology Option at BHCC is a two-year program that requires students to complete technical course work and hands-on laboratory training. Students become confident in their ability to properly handle research materials and operate laboratory equipment used in the field of biotechnology research. Students gain employable skills to join the biotechnology workforce.

Chemistry Concentration - This program prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities as chemistry majors. A further goal of the program is to provide students with the technical coursework and laboratory experience that would enable them to enter the workforce as entry-level laboratory technicians in positions that require some background in the physical and/or biological sciences. Graduates of this program may qualify to transfer using the benefits of MassTransfer to a four-year state university or University of Massachusetts campus.

Health Science - This program is designed for students who intend to apply for a health program at BHCC such Nursing, Medical Imaging, Surgical Technology, Medical Laboratory Tech, or Medical Laboratory Assistant. This program contains the science prerequisite courses required to apply for a health program at BHCC as well as satisfying all General Education requirements.  The required application prerequisite courses will be completed in the first two semesters of this program.  Students may then switch out of this program once they are admitted to a health program or they may continue and complete the entire program to receive their Associate in Arts Degree in Health Science.  Students completing this associate degree will also be qualified to apply for baccalaureate level health programs such as nursing or nutrition science.  This program also satisfies Mass Transfer requirements if a student decides to transfer into a program outside of health.
