Bunker Hill Community College Culinary Professor Wins Award for Shakespeare Scholarship

George R. Kelley, an assistant professor in Bunker Hill Community College’s culinary program, has won the Julia Child Award from Boston University for his master’s thesis “Seated at the Centaur’s Feast – Shakespeare’s Pathology of Consumption.” The award is given to students each year who have achieved outstanding scholarly work. Kelley was nominated by Professor Kenneth Albala, Visiting Professor of History from the College of the Pacific.

Bunker Hill Community College Teaches Tech Skills to Unemployed

Bunker Hill Community College this month trained its 250th student in the Microsoft Information Technology Community Connections Program, an innovative partnership with five Boston-area nonprofit organizations to help those under-employed and out of work. A grant from the Microsoft Unlimited Potential Community Technology Skills Program, administered through the Boston Foundation, supports the training.

Bunker Hill Community College Magazine Wins Major Design Award

The 20,000-circulation BHCC Magazine has won a major design award from The University & College Designers Association (UCDA), President Mary L. Fifield announced this week. The judges evaluated nearly 1,100 entries and gave out 188 awards. BHCC’s winning entry, which received an Award of Excellence from the UCDA, was a two-page spread in an article entitled “This Way to the Future,” in the Spring/Summer 2011 issue of the magazine. The article dealt with an innovative class on iPhone programming taught at the College.

Bunker Hill Community College Wins $1,150,000 Grant to Prepare Students for College

Bunker Hill Community College received a five-year grant of $230,000 per year through the U.S. Department of Education Talent Search program, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. The Talent Search grant is designed to prepare high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds for entry and success in college. With BHCC as the lead institution, the project's other partners include the Chelsea Public Schools, Families United in Educational Leadership (FUEL), and Choice Thru Education.

Bunker Hill Community College Wins Major State Grant to Accelerate Student Success

Bunker Hill Community College has received a grant of $200,802 from a Commonwealth of Massachusetts program designed to reward campus efforts to improve educational outcomes and to spur further innovation, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. The College placed among the top three recipients in a competitive process involving the state’s 29 colleges and universities. Grants ranging from $53,800 to $233,417 went to 18 successful applicants. An external review panel evaluated proposals and made recommendations for funding.

Award-winning Filmmaker and Author Michael Moore Speaks on September 15, 2011

Michael Moore, the celebrated documentary filmmaker, author and raconteur, will speak at Bunker Hill Community College on Thursday, September 15, 2011, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Moore will be this year’s first speaker in the College’s “Compelling Conversations” series, which is free and open to the public. Moore’s visit to BHCC is also part of a book tour for Here Comes Trouble: Stories from My life, which has just been released.

Workforce Development Center Offers Self-Defense Training for Airlines' Personnel

The Workforce Development Center at Bunker Hill Community College is offering a Crew Member Self-Defense Training (CMSDT) program for all actively employed flight and cabin crew members of U.S. passenger and cargo carriers. The one-day hands-on training course, which is free of cost to qualified crew members, will be offered on the following dates: 1) Sunday, October 30: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 2) Sunday, November 13: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 3) Sunday, December 11: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Bunker Hill Community College to Host Regional Sustainability Symposium, Nov. 3-4, 2011

Bunker Hill Community College will host the first Northeast Regional Collaborative Symposium of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) on November 3-4, 2011, in collaboration with Second Nature, a non-profit organization that seeks to create a sustainable society by transforming higher education. The ACUPCC, a network of more than 700 signatory members, represents the best practices of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate.

College Receives $2.2 Million U.S. Department of Labor Grant for IT Career Training

Bunker Hill Community College will receive $2.2 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop new jobs skills in IT (Information Technology) for displaced workers, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. The total grant – almost $20 million – was awarded to the National Information, Security, and Geospatial Technology Consortium (NISGTC), which will be housed at Collin College in Texas. All of the members of this national consortium, which includes Bunker Hill Community College and six other community colleges, have National Science Foundation affiliations.

Bunker Hill Community College received two top awards from District One of the National Council for Marketing and Publications (NCMPR) at the organization’s conference in Baltimore, November 13 to 15, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. NCMPR sets the standards for professionals working in the areas of communications, marketing, fundraising and alumni relations at two-year colleges nationwide.

College Makes "Top 40" List of Institutions with "Most International Students"

In the Chronicle of Higher Education's List of the "Top 40" Associate Institutions with the "most international students" BHCC was number 26, President Mary L. Fifield announced today. BHCC is the only community college in Massachusetts to make the "Top 40" List of Associate Institutions. The College's current international enrollment is 784, an increase of 30 students over the figure of 754 cited in the Chronicle's list. BHCC’s international students come from more than 90 countries and speak 75 different languages.

Bunker Hill Community College to Host Award-Winning Author Tim O'Brien

In honor of Veterans Day, The Bunker Hill Community College Veterans Center will be presenting Vietnam veteran and award-winning author, Tim O’Brien, on Thursday, November 10 at 1 p.m. in Room C202. O’Brien, who visited BHCC last year, is the author of eight books, most notably, The Things They Carried, listed by the New York Times as among the 20 best books of the last 25 years. O’Brien is known for his compelling portrayals of the Vietnam War and its impact on American servicemen and women engaged in that conflict.

BHCC Graduate Selected for National Mentorship Program by U.S. Green Building Council

Brian Alves, a graduate of Bunker Hill Community College, was selected to participate in the Classroom to Boardroom Diversity Mentorship Program designed by the U.S. Green Building Council (U.S.G.B.C). Alves graduated from BHCC in June 2011, with an Associate in Arts degree in Business Administration. During his time at BHCC, he was very active in college sustainability activities and co-founded the campus Sustainability Club. Alves is now enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he is studying business and finance.
